The Use of Alcohol Should be Banned for all State University Undergraduate Students According to the Core Institute, an organization that surveys college drinking practices, 300,000 of todays college students will eventually die of alcohol-related causes such as drunk driving accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, various cancers and heart disease (Phoenix House). All around the State campus, at frat parties, in black-light-lit dorm rooms, and even at casual social gatherings, alcohol can be found in abundance. Despite the many downsides to alcohol use, college students as a whole maintain a very casual attitude toward drinking. I believe that drinking causes many more problems than it is worth to anyone, which is why I propose thatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦People who are normally shy tend to come out of their shells after a couple drinks. To many people, being under the influence of alcohol is an important part of being social. In order to gain a clear understanding of why the average college student drinks, I asked ten drinkers in my house what their main reasons for drinking are. The most prevalent reasons given for drinking were that drinking heightens their feelings of pleasure, allows them to be more social and have more fun, and frees their mind, taking them away from their problems. A few said that they simply enjoy drinking because they like the taste. Considering alcoholââ¬â¢s ability ââ¬â as a mind-altering substance ââ¬â to relax people and make them feel good, it really is not surprising that many college students drink. However, what also must be considered are the alternatives to drinking. A variety of relaxation techniques exist to help people reduce stress and clear their minds. Among other activities, yoga, massages, and enjoyable hobbies have been shown to reduce anxiety in people. Also, people can receive psychotherapy or take medication to help deal with shyness (Shyness Clinic). There are over 500 organizations here at Iowa State, making it easy for almost anyone to get involved and have fun without resorting to alcohol.
